1999 നവംബർ 17-നാണ് യുനെസ്കോ ഫെബ്രുവരി 21-നെ ലോക മാതൃഭാഷാദിനമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചത്. 2008-ന് ലോക ഭാഷാവർഷമായി പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ച പ്രസ്താവനയിലൂടെ ഐക്യരാഷ്ട്രസഭയുടെ പൊതുസഭ ഈ ദിനാചരണത്തിന് ഔദ്യോഗിക അംഗീകാരം നൽകി.
